Types of 3D Animation
2D Animation (Vector Based)
2D animation is often used to refer to traditional hand-drawn animation, but it can also refer to computer vector animations using traditional animation methods. Vector-based animations, meaning computer-generated 2D animations, use exactly the same techniques as traditional animation, but benefit from the lack of physical objects needed to make traditional 2D animations and the ability to simultaneously use computer interpolation.
3D Animation (CGI, Computer Animation)
3D animation, also known as CGI or just CG, is produced by computer-generated image generation. That series of pictures is an animated shot's frames. 3D animation methods have many similarities with stop-motion animation, as they both deal with animating and posing models, and still conform to 2D animation's frame-by-frame strategy, but it is much more controllable as it is in a digital work-space.
Think of animated logos, videos to explain, app commercials, TV promotions, or even titles to open films. The creation process of Motion Graphics depends on the programs used, as software for video editing often has different UI or settings, but the idea is the same.
Stop Motion (Claymotion, Cut-outs)
Stop motion is performed by taking a photograph of an item, then just moving it a bit and taking another picture. The process is repeated and they offer the illusion of motion when the pictures are played back one after another. This is comparable to traditional animation, but instead of sketches it utilizes real-life materials.
Traditional Animation (2D, Cel, Hand drawn)
Traditional animation, sometimes called cel animation, is one of the old animation types, in which the animator draws every frame to generate the sequence of animation. Just as they used to do in Disney's old days. When you were a child, if you ever had one of those flip-books, you'll understand what I mean. Quickly screened sequential drawings generate the illusion of motion.
